No, Trading 212 does not offer spread betting. Trading 212 is an investing app founded in 2004. UK clients use Trading 212 UK Ltd, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), with firm reference number 609146. In the UK, it offers an Invest account, a Stocks and Shares ISA and a SIPP for shares and ETFs, but no spread betting.

If spread betting is what you want, you need an FCA-regulated spread betting provider. These are three alternatives:

  • Pepperstone: spread betting on MT4, MT5, cTrader and TradingView.
  • IG: the UK’s longest-running spread betting provider, with more than 17,000 markets.
  • CMC Markets: a wide range of markets on its own platform.

Spread bets and CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Between 69% and 73.6% of retail investor accounts lose money when spread betting and trading CFDs with the three alternatives in this article. You should consider whether you understand how spread bets and CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

What is spread betting?

Spread betting lets you bet on whether the price of a market will rise or fall, without owning the asset. You choose a stake per point of movement. If the market moves your way, you win your stake multiplied by the number of points. If it moves against you, you lose the same way.

For example, you bet £2 per point that the FTSE 100 will rise. If it rises 50 points, you make £100. If it falls 50 points, you lose £100.

Every market has two prices. You buy at the higher price (the offer) and sell at the lower price (the bid). The gap between them is the spread, and it’s the main way the provider earns money from you. Positions held overnight also pay a funding charge.

In the UK, spread betting profits are currently free of Capital Gains Tax and stamp duty. Tax treatment depends on your circumstances and can change. HMRC may treat it differently if spread betting is your main source of income.

Spread betting uses leverage. You only put down a deposit (margin), so your gains and losses are based on the full size of the position. FCA rules limit leverage for retail clients to 30:1 on major currency pairs and 5:1 on individual shares.

Does Trading 212 offer spread betting?

No. Trading 212 focuses on investing in real shares and ETFs, which you own, and it doesn’t offer spread betting accounts. Spread betting is a different product: you bet on price moves with leverage without owning anything.

How to choose a spread betting provider

  • Check the FCA register: only use a firm that is authorised by the FCA, and search the FCA warning list for its name. Offshore brands often offer higher leverage, but you lose the Financial Ombudsman Service and the FSCS.
  • Compare total costs: look at the spread on the markets you trade and the overnight funding charge if you hold positions for more than a day.
  • Pick the right platform: if you already use MT4, MT5, cTrader or TradingView, Pepperstone supports all of them. IG and CMC Markets have strong platforms of their own.
  • Start small: use a demo account first, then a small stake per point, and set a stop loss on every trade.
