No, DEGIRO does not offer spread betting. DEGIRO is a low-cost online broker for shares, ETFs, bonds, funds, options and futures, owned by the German bank flatexDEGIRO Bank SE. It doesn’t offer spread betting or CFDs.
There are two more points UK investors should know. In October 2026, DEGIRO’s UK website says that “on-boarding for new UK clients is temporarily unavailable”. DEGIRO also isn’t authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA): it serves UK clients from Germany, so investments are not covered by the UK Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).
If you want to spread bet from the UK, you need an FCA-regulated provider. These are three alternatives:
- Pepperstone: spread betting on MT4, MT5, cTrader and TradingView.
- IG: the UK’s longest-running spread betting provider, with more than 17,000 markets.
- CMC Markets: a wide range of markets on its own platform.
Spread bets and CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Between 69% and 73.6% of retail investor accounts lose money when spread betting and trading CFDs with the three alternatives in this article. You should consider whether you understand how spread bets and CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
What is spread betting?
Spread betting lets you bet on whether the price of a market will rise or fall, without owning the asset. You choose a stake per point of movement. If the market moves your way, you win your stake multiplied by the number of points. If it moves against you, you lose the same way.
For example, you bet £2 per point that the FTSE 100 will rise. If it rises 50 points, you make £100. If it falls 50 points, you lose £100.
Every market has two prices. You buy at the higher price (the offer) and sell at the lower price (the bid). The gap between them is the spread, and it’s the main way the provider earns money from you. Positions held overnight also pay a funding charge.
In the UK, spread betting profits are currently free of Capital Gains Tax and stamp duty. Tax treatment depends on your circumstances and can change. HMRC may treat it differently if spread betting is your main source of income.
Spread betting uses leverage. You only put down a deposit (margin), so your gains and losses are based on the full size of the position. FCA rules limit leverage for retail clients to 30:1 on major currency pairs and 5:1 on individual shares.
Does DEGIRO offer spread betting?
No. DEGIRO is an execution-only broker. It gives access to more than 45 exchanges in 30 countries for shares, bonds, funds, ETFs, options and futures, but it has no spread betting or CFD accounts.
Options and futures are the closest DEGIRO products to spread betting, since both let you take leveraged positions. They are complex products, and losses can exceed your initial outlay on some strategies. Unlike spread betting, gains on options and futures are subject to Capital Gains Tax.
DEGIRO’s UK website lists these costs:
- US shares: €1 commission plus a €1 handling fee per trade.
- ETF Core Selection: €0 commission plus a €1 handling fee per trade.
- Account: no deposit, withdrawal or monthly service fees. Currency, connectivity and external product costs may apply.
DEGIRO doesn’t offer an ISA or a SIPP, so gains and dividends above the annual allowances are taxable. If you want to invest through an ISA, compare the options in our guide to the cheapest stock trading platforms.

How to choose a spread betting provider
- Check the FCA register: only use a firm that is authorised by the FCA, and search the FCA warning list for its name. Offshore brands often offer higher leverage, but you lose the Financial Ombudsman Service and the FSCS.
- Compare total costs: look at the spread on the markets you trade and the overnight funding charge if you hold positions for more than a day.
- Pick the right platform: if you already use MT4, MT5, cTrader or TradingView, Pepperstone supports all of them. IG and CMC Markets have strong platforms of their own.
- Start small: use a demo account first, then a small stake per point, and set a stop loss on every trade.

Conclusion
DEGIRO doesn’t offer spread betting or CFDs. It has paused onboarding of new UK clients, and it isn’t authorised by the FCA, so its UK clients aren’t covered by the FSCS. If you want to spread bet, choose an FCA-regulated provider. Pepperstone suits traders who use MT4, MT5, cTrader or TradingView, IG offers the widest range with more than 17,000 markets and CMC Markets had the lowest share of losing retail accounts of the three, at 69%.
Spread betting is high risk, and most retail accounts lose money. Only trade with money you can afford to lose.

Do you pay tax on spread betting in the UK?
Spread betting profits are currently free of Capital Gains Tax and stamp duty for most UK traders. If spread betting is your main source of income, HMRC may treat it differently. Tax rules can change, and losses can’t be offset against other gains.
What are the differences between spread betting and CFDs?
Both let you trade price moves with leverage without owning the asset. With spread betting, you choose a stake per point, and profits are free of Capital Gains Tax in the UK. With CFDs, you trade a number of contracts, profits are subject to Capital Gains Tax and losses can be offset against other gains.
Is spread betting good for the long term?
Usually not. Overnight funding charges build up the longer you hold a position, which makes spread betting better suited to short-term trading. For long-term investing, a Stocks and Shares ISA is usually cheaper and also free of UK tax.
