I was talking to a friend the other day and I was surprised to learn that he didn’t know this little trick to saving money on food. I always thought this little trick of a money saver was common knowledge but this doesn’t seem to be the case. So today I share with you an easy way to save 20% on your food purchases.
In the UK, when buying food from a cafe, take out or restaurant, you always get asked the question “do you want to dine in or take out ?” The answer to this question will determine whether you pay more or you pay less for food.
According to the Value Added Tax (VAT) regulations in the U.K., some types of food are not subject to VAT if bought for take out, including cold foods such as sandwiches or salads. However, if you choose to eat in the restaurant, the 20% VAT must be applied.
So when visiting your local eatery or favourite chain such as Subway, just by saying “take out” you will save yourself a cool 20%.
And the best part with most eating places is that even if you say “take out”, no staff member will chase you away for staying and dining in.
So there you have it. A really easy way to save 20% on your food shop!
